About Us

high-kill-shelter-3

K-9 Lifesavers, a 501c(3) non-profit organization, rescues homeless and abandoned dogs from high-kill shelters, owners who can no longer care for them, and other high-risk situations. K-9 Lifesavers works with dedicated volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and kennels to provide loving temporary care while we find well-matched, carefully screened forever homes for each dog we take in. We also serve as a support group to our adopters and all dog owners by providing ongoing education and resources for the well-being of their dogs, including the importance of proactive spay/neuter policies, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.

Where do K-9 dogs come from?

Most K-9 dogs come from high-kill shelters in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee & Georgia. We work with shelter partners in low-income and rural areas where hundreds of highly-adoptable dogs are euthanized each month due to overpopulation problems, lack of spay/neuter education and inadequate funding. With the help of our dedicated volunteers and supporters, K-9 Lifesavers rescues as many of these dogs as possible.

Where are the K-9 Dogs now?

The K-9 Dogs live in one of our partner boarding facilities or in foster homes throughout the Washington, DC area, including Maryland and Northern Virginia. They are all waiting for a family of their own!

How do K-9 Dogs get here?

We have wonderful partners who drive the K-9 Dogs all the way from their rural shelters to the DC area. A portion of each adoption fee goes to the costs of arranging these transports.
